Adblue
Adblue
Adblue is the best-recognised form of Diesel Exhaust Fluid, or DEF, and is added to a diesel vehicle’s exhaust to reduce exhaust emissions. It is an aqueous solution, which is stored in a separate tank in the vehicle and is injected into the exhaust stream of the engine to reduce Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions to comply with new emission standards and reduce air pollution. Your Adblue tank is usually next to your fuel filler, under the bonnet or in the boot of your car and usually has a blue filler cap. You should never put Adblue into the fuel tank as this will permanently damage your vehicle.
Adblue works by turning dangerous pollutants into gases that are less harmful to the environment and is a colourless combination of urea and de-ionised water. It’s not blue, as you might expect from the name! The urea used in Adblue is manmade, although people often assume that it is an animal product. If you have an older car or a diesel car registered after 2015 from a manufacturer such as Renault, Peugeot, Volkswagen, Jaguar or Landrover, your vehicle will use Adblue technology. You can check your handbook to find out.
Nitrogen oxide gases are a major environmental and health hazard, causing respiratory problems in humans as well as air pollution and acid rain. The process by which Adblue works is simple: the solution turns to ammonia and carbon dioxide at high temperatures, and these react with the nitrogen oxide created by your engine, breaking it down to become simple nitrogen and water vapour, which are harmless. This process enables vehicles to give off less harmful emissions and has been used for many years in heavy vehicles such as lorries and buses.
It is a good idea to familiarise yourself with the Adblue warning system in your vehicle, which lets you know that you are running low on the solution. If you run out of Adblue, your engine will automatically be reduced in power and performance and it will not be possible to restart the engine until you refill the Adblue tank. To refill the Adblue tank, you can simply unscrew the Adblue filler cap and pour in the solution, but you should check the handbook for your vehicle to ensure that you have the correct tank and fluid. You may need a funnel to ensure efficient filling, and you should avoid spills as these can cause damage over time.
