Petrol

Petrol is a retail fuel that is also known as crude oil, gasoline or oil. It is a yellow/black liquid that is a combination of the hydrocarbons contained in natural gas and is a fossil fuel, or non-renewable source of energy. This means it comes from the Earth, where it has been created in a process of pressure on the sedimentary layers, which has taken place underground over millions of years. The fuel we use today is made of marine organisms which settled at the bottom of the ocean and were covered with sand and clay and then transformed into natural gas and petroleum under high pressure and at high temperatures. Since the discovery that it could be used as a fuel, it has been extracted and used across the globe for transportation, heating, lighting and the creation of plastics.

Petrol is believed to have been used as a fuel in Ancient China and the petrol industry as we know it today began when James Young, a Scottish chemist, discovered that the natural petroleum seepage he had observed in the Riddings coal mine could be distilled to produce a thin lamp oil and a thicker oil that could be used for lubrication. He carried out further experiments and managed to distil an early version of petroleum, which he patented in 1850. He worked with a business partner to form the first commercial oil works and refinery in the world and the petrol industry was born.

The major oil companies which dominate the oil and gas industry today began to appear in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, including the Standard Oil Company, which was founded in 1865 by John D. Rockefeller and was succeeded by companies including ExxonMobil, which is still one of the largest oil companies on the planet. Today, with world events tied up with oil production and distribution and the development of renewable energy sources, oil continues to be an extremely valuable resource and the industry is one of the most important in the world.

Petrol is, of course, used as fuel for vehicles and is still the main fuel for the transportation industry. This means that cars, buses, vans, lorries and even aeroplanes are reliant on petrol or diesel to power them. However, it also has many other uses, including heating, fuelling machinery, generating electricity and making plastics, which is another huge global industry that relies on oil. Synthetic plastics are created using crude oil, coal or natural gas, although many renewable alternatives have been introduced to the market already and the development of plant-based plastics is promising.
