Sulphur Free Gas Oil

Sulphur-free gas oil is a type of diesel fuel that is often used in home heating appliances, industrial boilers and off-road vehicles. It is formulated to contain less sulphur than other forms of diesel and is considered to be a more environmentally friendly gas oil than previous diesel fuels. Here in Ireland, sulphur-free gas oil is used in the agricultural, forestry, horticultural and fishing industries, and it is dyed green to distinguish it from road diesel, or Derv.

Sulphur-free gas oil (SFGO) cannot be used on public roads and heavy fines will be incurred if you are discovered to be using it in a vehicle that uses the public road system. It is ideal for non-road vehicles and machinery, such as tractors and construction machinery. It is safe for use in modern engines, which may have been damaged by the marked gas oil previously used, and contains oil 10 sulphur parts per million, compared with 1000 parts per million in marked gas oil.

The amount of sulphur in oil determines what sort of engine it is suitable for and sulphur-rich fuels are likely to lead to corrosion of engines and refining equipment, as well as deactivating the catalysts used in the production process. Sulphur is a naturally occurring chemical compound, but when it is burned, it can emit sulphur dioxide and this is not good news for the environment. High levels of sulphuric acid may be created when sulphur dioxide mixes with air and water, and this leads to acid rain, which can damage waterways, pollute agricultural crops and contribute to deforestation. The potential damage to aquatic life and drinking water sources is huge, and research also shows that the presence of sulphur dioxide in high concentrations can damage the respiratory tract in humans and affect lung function, as well as irritate the skin and the eyes. For all of these reasons, authorities are keen to reduce sulphur emissions and low sulphur fuels are crucial in this aim.

Since January 2011, it has been a requirement of the European Fuel Quality Directive that all non-road mobile machinery should be powered by low-sulphur fuel, with less than 10 mg of sulphur per kilogram. Major oil companies quickly developed low sulphur alternatives that made it possible for a wide-scale shift to low sulphur fuel in off-road vehicles, and the naturally occurring sulphur that comes from crude oil is today being used for a variety of more environmentally friendly options, including in the development of sustainable energy, such as solar power.
